White Cane Day 2021

As any good vision program that trains future teachers of the visually impaired (TVI) or orientation and mobility specialists (O&M) our department made a showing for White Cane Day.

On October 16th, 2021 Leon Co. School District vision program families and teachers, Lighthouse of Big Bend (LBB) service providers, board members, and clients, and FSU students, and FL Division of Blind Services (DBS) met and walked in downtown Tallahassee to raise awareness to our community.

There was a table with information, Perkins braillers, a variety of canes, abaci, and other tactile items for people to engage with and converse over.

Even though that most programs, blind schools, and organizations across the country gather for such events, there is still so much more to be done. See more info on this important day in my previous post with a lesson plan to be used in general education classrooms.

Images: there are four images: one is a photo of a white poster board Leon Co. vision students created sharing their experiences living with a vision loss, and the other three are a variety of people gathered around and chatting in Downtown Tallahassee market.
